Oscar winner Angelina Jolie has revealed on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times that she underwent several procedures earlier this year to have a preventive double mastectomy, with her final operation on April 27, 2013. The 37-year-old entertainer learned she carries the “faulty” BRCA1 gene that increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer after genetic testing. And following genetic counseling, she opted to have both breasts removed and to undergo reconstructive surgery. “Doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer,” Angelina Jolie, who has three biological kids and three adopted kids, wrote in the article. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive.” The “Salt” actress started the nearly three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved at the Pink Lotus Breast Center in Los Angeles in early February. On April 27, her procedures concluded. Angelina Jolie said she has kept the process private so far, but wrote about with hopes of helping other women. Her decision was prompted by a desire to encourage them to get gene-tested and to raise awareness of the options available to those at risk. Ms. Jolie also said that her husband of eight years, Brad Pitt was by her side for “every minute of the surgeries.” And of course, she had other six VIPs solidly in her corner: Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, Zahara, 8, Shiloh, 6, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 4, who played a role in her recovery as well.
