Be Your Own Option Strategist

An option strategist is simply someone who plans an options strategy and makes decisions as to what sort of options to purchase and what approach to use when it comes to the actual trading of the options. An option strategist working for an investment company has an incredibly detailed knowledge of all types of options. A good option strategist can make accurate predictions that lead to the purchase of options likely to turn a profit.

Many investors choose to work with an option strategist due to the complex nature of the stock market – and other markets where options can be purchased such as commodities and Forex. It takes a great deal of time and research to reach the level of most professionals. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t be your own option strategist and make you own investment decisions. It just means that you should generally keep your trading strategy on the simpler side, at least until you are more experienced.

Most investors don’t need an option strategist to make basic options transactions such as a simple long call or put trade. If you aren’t working with a large number of options or handling a complex portfolio of investments, you can probably be your own options strategist with a little time spent learning about the market. Once you have a basic grasp on how options work and the strategies most commonly used, planning your own strategy is perfectly possible for the average investor.

If you are working with a lot of different investments, having an option strategist to give you advice and help you to plan more complex options strategies where multiple transactions are involved such as vertical spreads is a good idea. Unless investing and playing the market is your full time job, it is hard to keep tabs on all of the different aspects of the market that can affect options. Having the assistance of someone who does have the time to do all the research needed can be invaluable.

If you want to be your own option strategist, there is no reason you can’t; just be aware that working with options can take a lot of time and effort, and if you are a busy person or simply not as interested in the details as the profit, you might be better off letting someone else make recommendations for you. In the end, it comes down to how much time you have to devote to working with your investments, and what your long term goals are.
